Christ in Christmas by Cheryl Brackemyre

My Mom loved Christmas.

I can’t unpack my Christmas decorations without memories flooding my eyes remembering her. From the ornaments that I made for her, to the tablecloths she used to don our table.

She loved white lights on the tree, and spent hours putting the lights on the tree and placing each ornament in it’s perfect spot. I love unpacking her nativities and remembering when my brothers or I got her each one. Recently when my Dad downsized from the home I grew up in, I stumbled upon an old popcorn tin full of old glass ornaments that we had decorated with glue and glitter, each sparkling with my mom’s handwriting and our names. So many precious memories of the Christmas’ past.

One tradition that we started when my boys were small was a birthday cake for Jesus at our Christmas Eve meal. Mom would get a small little cake from Kroger with icing and confetti and place the baby Jesus from our nativity on it.

We would sing Happy Birthday and then share in a birthday cake. This always stood out to me above the presents and the hoopla of the season. We still do this today, and it seems to put things into perspective for me.

I love the Christmas season and love to give gifts and sing carols and all of the festive happenings of the winter. But there is more, so much more.

Isaiah 9:6

For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
 Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
 Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Don’t let Santa and his legend, be the center of your Christmas. That Elf in the Shelf is cute and fun, but he didn’t come to save the world. The stockings hung on the chimney with care are cute and cozy, but they can’t warm your soul.

Reread Isaiah 9:6 as you this season unfolds, and celebrate what Christmas it is really all about, remember you are making memories, and your children will remember how you celebrate. My mom is celebrating her second Christmas with the Prince of Peace this year, and I couldn’t be more grateful that she celebrated him with me while she was here on earth.

Don’t miss celebrating the CHRIST in CHRISTMAS. What an amazing gift we were given.
